"MUSIC GRAFFITI -FAST-FORWARD / REWIND"
'Missing' from the Rare Effect Exhibition, Lisbon - May 2021
Each MUSIC GRAFFITI painting represents the interpretation of a musical idea or thought into a sonic visual concept.
The single large black music note is inspired by the stencil culture associated with a first wave street art aesthetic.
The paintings feature textured three dimensional ‘architectural’ surfaces built up in layers of silica and paint.
Dimensions are approximately 61cm (W) x 91.5cm (H) x 3.8cm (D) / 24” (W) x 36” (H) x 1.5” (D) - Aspect ratio is 2:3
Each painting has an accompanying audiovisual digital remix artwork that can be (optionally) activated in augmented reality.

“We were partying hard at the Wilde Möhre Fesitval near Drebkau in Germany...people danced to the loud and pumping electric music...two pieces of Zeiwarp‘s music note art works were hanging on the wooden walls...majestic and mystically lit up by the flashes of the disco lights and stroboscopes.
Next day, hung over, I bought both artworks...”

Zeitwarp is a multidisciplinary creative studio based near Cambridge in the UK, producing internationally-exhibited post-conceptual art, digital art, physical paintings, music/sound/noise, sculpture/installations and augmented reality activations.
The Rhythm Section is our new art and music initiative to support emerging musicians and independent music projects with up to a 33% share of all art sales from our website.
The idea is to create a free-to-join membership community based around the music-themed artistic output from Zeitwarp Studios, and then to grow that idea into something much bigger.
The Rhythm Section concept is an extension of something we have been doing to directly support touring musicians for the last seven years.
BACKBEAT
"WELL...HOW DID I GET HERE?"
The Rhythm Section has its origins back in 2017 as an informal way of supporting touring musicians with somewhere to crash for free in the storage space above our garage studio.
At the beginning it was just a basic place to shelter in a sleeping bag on some old sofa cushions. There wasn't even a staircase and you had to use a ladder to get up there.
Over the last seven years, we added a fridge, a shower room and even a staircase...and it’s now used regularly by a range of bands and solo musicians as a place to bed down for the night before moving onto the next tour stop.
We christened it 'The Caymana' after a long running in-joke about a short-lived 'tropical' cream liqueur brand from the 1990's.

“Staying at the Caymana quite literally made a tour we did last year possible. Having a space to stay for free is gold to any touring band, and for it to be as comfortable and well equipped as it was really made a difference too.
Places like this do not exist.”

Rare Effect Exhibition - Lisbon - May 2021
The plan is now to build on the micro impact of The Caymana by expanding it into something much bigger as part of a grassroots incubator for emerging musicians and independent music projects.
The Rhythm Section community initiative is just the first step in this process.
So...what actually is the Rhythm Section?
Essentially it's a free-to-join membership community and newsletter for people interested in art, music and making a difference to the outcomes of emerging musicians.
Members receive a series of benefits - including giveaways, exclusives and discounts based initially around the music-themed artistic output from Zeitwarp Studios - with a plan to extend this to include a broader mix of music and art related products and services.

EYES ON THE PRIZE
'F# Minor V' - Original MUSIC GRAFFITI Painting
Garage Art Gallery
For the first ever Rhythm Section competition we've decided to give away one 'F# Minor V' - one of the most iconic MUSIC GRAFFITI paintings.
In October 2023 it was exhibited in Milan at the Palazzo delle Stelline and afterwards at a series of pop-up venues around the city.
'F# Minor V' features a predominantly metallic silver background with broad spectrum multicoloured contrast effects. The visual sonic motif is embossed with a custom purple colour.
The surface is a textured silica render relief effect. Pitted areas across the painting reveal alternative custom pink colour accents and further texturisation.
The painting has an accompanying audiovisual remix that can be optionally activated when viewing it on a smartphone. The background visual sonic pattern has been exhibited separately as part of a series of conceptual digital artworks.
F# Minor V has been used extensively in a wide range of MUSIC GRAFFITI promotional imagery, and has until recently been on display at an independent gallery near Cambridge with a sale price of £999.00.

Painting Name Detail
GLITCH BREAKS is a series of visual remix artworks based on a physical MUSIC GRAFFITI painting using the FEEDBACK LOOPS process.
The original painting is scanned into digital format and then remixed using both audio and visual seeds to create a series of 'visual stems' that are then orchestrated into a new digital artwork.
A static image from the video artwork is then selected as a physical Art Print that acts as a gateway to the audiovisual remix artwork that can be optionally activated in augmented reality using a smartphone.
The GLITCH BREAK Remix Art Print of F# Minor V will be available exclusively to Rhythm Section members and at a discounted RS member price.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
G# Minor IX - MUSIC GRAFFITI
Béton Brut Surface Detail
Why are we giving away a £1000 MUSIC GRAFFITI painting?
Basically, we need to reach out to as many people as possible to introduce them to the Rhythm Section mission and the mutual benefits of being part of it.
If it goes well, we'll do it again.
Yeah...but why?
The economic landscape in 2024 for the vast majority of musicians is bleak.
More music is being listened to than ever before, however more independent venues are shutting down every year, and streaming has become nothing more than a fantasy revenue stream.
Even successful artists with record deals, management, and festival appearances are struggling. By comparison, the path for emerging and grassroots musicians looks almost impossible.
A recent Guardian article (25th April 2024) on “the cost of touring crisis” highlighted just how extreme the chasm is between the top 1% of touring acts and the majority of relatively successful bands - those with regular radio play and festival appearances.
A five-piece band that recently crashed with us were looking at an overnight cost of £600 for accommodation with the gig fee being £1000.
That's pretty much everything gone after food & petrol.
In his early years Ed Sheeran famously slept under an arch outside Buckingham Palace for a few nights and caught up on sleep on the Tube:
“I spent a week catching up on sleep on Circle Line trains. I’d go out and play a gig, wait until 5am when the Underground opened, sleep on the Circle Line until 12, go to a session – and then repeat.”
Whether you're a fan of his music or not maybe together we can - at the very least - do something to stop the next generation of Ed Sheeran's sleeping on the Circle Line between gigs.
Personally, I know a bunch of musicians in their 20's and 30's who are carving out a living grinding against the rock face of the "gig economy".
The struggle is real.
Given the diminshing level of state support for the arts since 2008 and the new economics of the music industry I've come to believe that we need to find new and innovative ways of supporting them.
My hope is that the Rhythm Section can be the beginning of one of them.
From there, the ambition is to grow the principles of the Rhythm Section into an independent and sustainable grassroots incubator for emerging musicians and music projects.
So...in order to make a difference we need as many people interested in art and music - and being part of our mission - to join with us at the beginning to build some momentum.

We have a lot planned.
The idea is to reward people for being involved at every level - even just to help spread the word.
However, this "journey of a thousand miles" begins with a single step - which is signing up to the Rhythm Section community & newletter with just your email address below.
That's the plan - I hope you like it.
